Lacy Court is a design study that asks a question becoming increasingly urgent in Calgary's inner city: how do you densify a mid-century heritage building without destroying what makes it worth keeping? The existing structure is modest in scale but genuine in character — the kind of building that gives a neighbourhood its texture and its memory, and that is under increasing pressure from the economics of densification.
The study explores a series of strategies for adding density to the site while preserving and enhancing the existing building. The goal is to demonstrate that the heritage condition and the density imperative are not inherently in conflict.
